What Is An Industrial Mezzanine Floor?
An industrial mezzanine floor is a freestanding raised platform installed within a warehouse, factory or distribution facility to create additional usable floor space on a second level. Built from structural steel, industrial mezzanines are designed to support significantly higher loads than office or retail equivalents, making them suitable for storage, production, equipment housing and order picking operations. They allow businesses to double or treble their operational floor area without relocating, extending the building or interrupting day-to-day operations during installation.
What Can Industrial Mezzanine Floors Be Used For?
Industrial mezzanines are used across a wide range of applications. Common uses include bulk storage and pallet storage, order picking platforms, production line support structures, machinery housings, quality control stations, staff welfare facilities and plant rooms. In warehousing and logistics environments, mezzanines are frequently integrated with pallet gates, conveyors and goods lifts to allow efficient movement of products between levels. Because the structure is purpose-designed for the required load specification, it can be adapted to suit almost any industrial use case.
How Much Weight Can An Industrial Mezzanine Floor Hold?
The load capacity of an industrial mezzanine is determined by its structural specification and is calculated by a structural engineer based on the intended use. Standard office mezzanines are typically designed for loads of around 3.5 to 5 kilonewtons per square metre, but industrial mezzanines are regularly specified to 7.5, 10 or even 15 kilonewtons per square metre to accommodate racked storage, heavy machinery or dense product loads. Point loads from racking uprights, pallet trucks and plant equipment are also factored into the design. A site survey and engineering assessment will confirm the correct specification for your application.
How Long Does It Take To Install An Industrial Mezzanine?
As we’re sure you can appreciate, installation timescales depend on the size and complexity of the project. That said, most industrial mezzanines can be installed within one to three weeks once fabrication is complete. Larger or more complex structures may take longer, particularly where phased installation is required to keep part of the facility operational throughout the build. However, since industrial mezzanine floors are freestanding steel structures, they can typically be installed with minimal disruption to surrounding operations and without major groundworks or structural alterations to the existing building.
What Is The Difference Between An Industrial Mezzanine And An Office Mezzanine?
The primary difference is the structural specification. Industrial mezzanines are engineered to carry significantly higher loads than office mezzanines, using heavier steel sections, closer beam centres and more robust decking to accommodate racked storage, plant equipment and pallet handling.
The access arrangements also differ, with industrial mezzanine floors typically incorporating wider staircases, pallet gates, goods lifts and heavy-duty safety barriers rather than the glazed partitions and lightweight finishes associated with office installations. The fire safety strategy may also be more complex in industrial settings, depending on the building classification and the materials being stored.
Do I Need Planning Permission For An Industrial Mezzanine?
In most cases, the internal installation of a mezzanine within an existing industrial or warehouse building falls under Permitted Development rights and does not require planning permission, provided the external appearance of the building is unaffected.
However, Building Regulations approval is required in virtually all cases, and your lease may require you to obtain landlord consent before any structural alterations are carried out.
As we specialise in industrial mezzanine floors, our team will happily advise on the specific requirements for your building and location before work begins.
How Do I Know If My Building Is Suitable For An Industrial Mezzanine?
Rest assured that at The Mezzanine Company, our technicians take care of such considerations on behalf of your business.
The three main factors we will assess are clear internal height, floor slab condition and available footprint. As a general guide, a minimum eaves height of around 4.5 to 5 metres is needed to achieve adequate head height on both the ground and mezzanine levels, though this depends on the activities planned and any services routing overhead. The existing floor slab must be capable of supporting the column loads from the mezzanine structure and there must be sufficient clear space for the installation without conflicting with racking, machinery or fire escape routes.
A site survey carried out by our specialist installers is the most reliable way to assess suitability and identify any constraints before committing to a design. Please contact us today for a free quote so that we can get the ball rolling for you!
